IMAT Physics

IMAT Physics: study guide and practice

In physics, choose the model before choosing the equation. Identify the system, list known quantities with units, and decide which assumptions apply. A quick sketch and a check of the expected size of the answer often prevent more mistakes than extra algebra.

What to study in Physics

These topics follow MEDichondria's mapped curriculum. Check the annual MUR syllabus for the binding content scope of your admission cycle.

  • Physical Quantities & Measurement
  • Kinematics
  • Dynamics
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Electricity & Electromagnetism

See Physics in the complete syllabus. Physics and Mathematics are separate study tracks here; the 2026 decree grouped their exam questions together.

Study sequence

Build the foundations, then apply them.

  1. Step 1

    Establish measurement and mechanics

Practise unit conversions, vectors, and reading graphs. Connect displacement, velocity, and acceleration, then use force diagrams to study Newton's laws, work, energy, and momentum.

  2. Step 2

Extend the model to fluids and heat

Distinguish pressure from force and density from mass. Connect temperature, energy transfer, and gas behaviour. State whether a relationship assumes constant temperature, volume, or pressure.

  3. Step 3

    Build electrical and wave reasoning

Track potential difference, current, and resistance through series and parallel circuits. Review fields and waves using their defining quantities. Check dimensions and limiting cases after every calculation.

Fit these steps into a weekly IMAT study plan.

Common mistakes

Know what to check before choosing an answer.

  • Confusing distance travelled with displacement.
  • Using a constant-acceleration equation when acceleration changes.
  • Adding parallel resistances as though they were in series.
  • Leaving centimetres or milliseconds unconverted in an SI calculation.

Original practice

2 Physics questions, with reasoning

These introductory IMAT-style teaching examples are written for this guide. They are not official past-paper questions or a prediction of the next exam. Choose an answer and state your reasoning before opening the solution.

Example 1 · Kinematics

An object starts from rest and accelerates in a straight line at a constant 2.0 m/s² for 5.0 s. What distance does it travel during this interval?

  1. A.5 m
  2. B.10 m
  3. C.20 m
  4. D.25 m
  5. E.50 m
Show answer and worked explanation

Answer D: 25 m

With initial speed u = 0 and constant acceleration, s = ut + ½at² = ½ × 2.0 × 5.0².

The distance is 25 m. Alternatively, the final speed is 10 m/s and the average speed over the interval is 5 m/s, giving 5 × 5 = 25 m.

Example 2 · Electricity

A 4 Ω resistor and a 6 Ω resistor are connected in series across an ideal 12 V supply. What current flows through the 4 Ω resistor?

  1. A.0.5 A
  2. B.1.2 A
  3. C.2.0 A
  4. D.3.0 A
  5. E.5.0 A
Show answer and worked explanation

Answer B: 1.2 A

Series resistances add, so the total resistance is 4 + 6 = 10 Ω. Ohm's law gives I = V/R = 12/10 = 1.2 A.

The same current flows through both series resistors. Using 12/4 would incorrectly assign the entire supply voltage to the 4 Ω resistor.
